The pitch nobody saw coming
The producers wanted a sitcom, not a property tour.
Most travel-show segments open with a wide shot of the house and a host walking a hallway. This one opens with a phone ringing. A television crew had flown into Cape Haze to cover Seaside Boca, a Travel DRD property on Florida's Gulf coast — one of five homes owner Nicolas Giacaman and his partners have handcrafted toward a single aim, that a stay there be unique and unforgettable. Somewhere in pre-production the concept shifted from "tour" to "bit."
The title card gave it away first — a yellow oval, red script, dropped straight over the front of the house in a treatment unmistakably borrowed from a certain 1990s sitcom about nothing. Then came the cold open: a call from the host before he'd even set foot on the property.
"Hello? This is Evan Michael. You think you can keep Staycation out of Florida? We're moving in, lock, stock and barrel."
The bit ran the length of the episode. Evan Michael — an Emmy Award-winning journalist and TV presenter with more than twenty years on camera, previously a co-host and producer of This Is Golf on CBS — arrived by golf cart, argued good-naturedly about how to pronounce "golf cart," and accepted a cup of tea from Italo Campilii that existed for exactly one reason: so someone could later say they were ready to "tee it up" on the property's mini-golf course. By the time Evan took in the whole layout, he had his closing line ready.
"Seaside Boca — it feels like I'm at Boca Vista."
If that lands as a punchline, credit goes to the writers who built the whole segment around a single Del Boca Vista reference and stuck the landing. The crew wrapped the day the way any good Florida evening should end: at the historic Gasparilla Island Lighthouse, glasses raised to "the best of Florida, the best of friends, and to sun, sand, family and fun."
