Elle and Hector's engagement session took place inside Binnacle Books in Beacon, New York — the very bookstore where Hector proposed to Elle. Acromatico photographed the couple there just days before their upcoming wedding in Boston, then wandered through Beacon together.
Hector's proposal was built for a reader: he reserved Binnacle Books in Beacon, NY, hid a love-story book in the shelves, and tucked the ring inside a box made to look like a book. Because of COVID, he proposed virtually — and Elle said yes. A few days before their upcoming wedding in Boston, the couple returned to that same bookstore, where our friends at Binnacle Books kindly let us reserve the space for their engagement session.
Afterward we walked around Beacon and stopped at Glazed Over Donuts, because you donut say no to donuts. Racing the early sunset after the time change was a challenge, but Elle and Hector just went with it. Elle called herself a little camera shy; she eased in quickly, and they barely felt the camera there. Rain was in the forecast, so we asked them to bring a cute umbrella — and when the sky stayed clear, we borrowed Hector's water bottle and made it rain ourselves so the umbrella wouldn't go to waste.
“He reserved a bookstore. She loves books. Hid a love story book in the shelves and then hid the ring inside a box that looked like a book.”
Good to know
Beacon is a small city in Dutchess County, New York, on the east bank of the Hudson River about 60 miles north of New York City. Its walkable Main Street is lined with independent shops, galleries, and cafes, and the city is widely known as the home of Dia Beacon, a major contemporary art museum set in a former factory along the river.
Binnacle Books is an independent bookstore on Beacon's Main Street — the setting for Elle and Hector's proposal and engagement session. Nearby, Glazed Over Donuts is also on Main Street, making the area easy to cover on foot for couples planning a Beacon engagement shoot. The compact downtown means a bookstore, a donut stop, and Hudson-side scenery all sit within a short walk of one another.
