Acromatico photographed the Garcia family — Mike, Ana, and their three kids — in a backyard family and 10-year-anniversary session in Virginia in March 2020. Longtime friends who had moved away from the studio's New York base, the Garcias were overdue for a get-together, so Acromatico road-tripped down for a long weekend.
This was a small, personal session for the Garcias — Mike and Ana and their three children — friends Acromatico has known for the longest time. After the family moved to Virginia, distance never stopped the get-togethers, and the studio decided they were overdue for a Garcia family weekend. They piled into their Fiat and road-tripped down from New York for a nice long weekend together.
Mike and Ana had just celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary, so Acromatico wanted to do something small and special: a quick family and anniversary session right in their backyard. Despite the ridiculous cold, kids needing naps, and everyone wanting to run back inside to warm up, the session came together — and the kids were great. As the studio put it, capturing them in their natural moments is exactly why they always recommend freezing these memories behind the lens before the kids grow up.
“It's crazy how time flies and how fast they grow, so we always recommend capturing those memories and freezing them behind the lens.”
Good to know
Virginia sits in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Maryland and Washington, D.C. to the north, and the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley to the west. Its mix of suburban neighborhoods, historic towns, coastal Tidewater communities, and mountain landscapes gives families a wide range of backdrops, from a private backyard to a state park or shoreline.
This particular session was shot entirely in the family's own backyard — a reminder that you don't need a grand venue for meaningful family portraits. A home setting keeps young kids comfortable, makes nap and warm-up breaks easy, and captures children in their natural environment. If you're searching for a Virginia family photographer, a backyard or at-home session is one of the most relaxed formats for families with small children, especially in colder months when staying close to the house matters.
Acromatico is a family-run photography and brand studio founded in 2004, working across South Florida and New York City with a dark fine-art "Brand Studio" aesthetic. For close friends, the team has been known to travel — as the Garcias' Virginia weekend shows.
