Time for our yearly family sessions to start rolling — and we love it when it’s this family’s turn, because they’re dear friends and truly special to us. This year they decided to go for a different look, so we headed out at 6AM to Pompano Beach for a sunrise photo session. Worth it? 100%.

Because the beach faces east over open Atlantic water, the sun rises directly over the ocean horizon, which is exactly what makes it work for sunrise portraits, an unobstructed view of the sun coming up over the water.
If you are arranging a family beach sunrise session here, the single most important step is timing: be on the sand at least 30 minutes before sunrise, and research the exact sunrise time for the city and date you are shooting. Look for a spot with a clear view of the horizon, with no trees or buildings blocking the sun, and keep the background simple, the open sky and ocean, so the rising light stays the subject.
